If you are interested in refereeing soccer in Alberta as a new referee, you are required to register, attend and pass a referee course. After completing and passing the course, you will be registered in the Alberta Soccer Association (ASA) website database as an active member.
Overview An individual interested in becoming a referee will need to take either a Mini referee course or an Entry level course. Participants will need to be prepared for both classroom and on field activities. Please arrive a few minutes early to fill out information confirming your attendance and you MUST attend the entire course length to qualify as completing the course. Payment must be complete up to 2 days prior to the course date start time and payment will not be accepted at the course. Please bring your own lunch and refreshments to each course and also requires pen and paper, clothing for possible outdoor activities and footwear.

For the Mini referee course, students of 12 and 13 years old will be introduced to the basic Laws of The Game for U10 soccer. A free whistle and a badge will be provided for each referee. You will practice proper whistling, arm directions and basic foul recognition at the course. There will not be a test to pass but you must attend the whole 4 hour course. Course fee : $10.00
For the Entry course, students 14 and older will familiarize yourself with the applications of the Laws of The Game in general and also learn the principals of the Look Sharp, Be Sharp program. You will practice proper whistling, arm directions and basic foul recognition at the course and there is also an assistant referee segment. You will be required to write a final exam which you must pass to complete the course. Course length is 16 hours over a Saturday and Sunday. Your first year of ASA registration fees are included. Course fee : (14 & 15 yr olds) $140.00 (16+ yr olds) $165.00
Any referee who has taken a Mini referee course (12 & 13 yr olds) in the past will need to take a Mini refresher course. This is a 2 hour course which you will review the Laws of The Game and we will discuss past experiences and how to improve on these events. A man management segment will also be introduced. Course fee : free
A referee who has taken an Entry level course in the past will need to take an Adult refreshercourse every spring and fall. You will familiarize yourself with the applications of the laws of The Game in general and also learn the principals of the Look Sharp, Be Sharp program. This is a 3 hour course which will be divided up into 3 segments: administration, recognition and participation. NOTE : You must log into your account on the upper right corner of Ref Centre, Once in click "Registration" and then "Refresher courses". You will need to answer a series of Indoor referee questions before choosing a course date. Course fee : free
Any referee who has taken the Entry level course but has never refereed Indoor soccer will need to take a conversion course. This course is designed to educate the referee in the rules of Indoor boarded soccer only. This is a 6 hour course shared between classroom and on field activities. This course is only available in the fall. NOTE : You must log into your account on the upper right corner of Ref Centre, Once in click "Registration" and then "Conversion courses". Course fee : free
A Futsal course is for those who are selected, to be educated on the Laws of The Game for Futsal. The Futsal game is for U10-A, all tier 1 - U12 to U18 age groups and College games. There is a limited number of referees needed for Futsal. This course is only available in the fall. Course fee : free
