2022 - 2023 Indoor Season Key Changes

Overview

Prior to the start of every season, CMSA reviews and reflects on formats, rules and schedules to ensure we offering programs that align with the most meaningful evolution of the game. Decisions are made after review from post season surveys, conversations with our members, and in-person consultation with the CMSA Indoor Working Group. Members of the Indoor Working Group were solicited from club technical leaders, referees, referee leaders and administrators across both in-district clubs and out-of-district clubs. Through diligent discussion and application, CMSA presents the key changes for this upcoming 2022 - 2023 Indoor Season.

Highlights

7v7 Indoor Format
CMSA is excited to offer 7v7 as an indoor format for all U10-U19 teams in all tiers this upcoming Indoor 2022/23 Season. The 7v7 format on boarded fields will not use the boards as a boundary. CMSA is working with facility operators to have boundary lines (sidelines, end lines, and goalkeeper area) placed on the fields for this game format.

It is important that all players within CMSA are given a match format that will prove to be enjoyable for them, while also aiding in their overall development within soccer. This transition to a 7v7 format allows Calgary Minor Soccer to align closer to Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards. This updated format change will allow for a consistent experience for some of our youngest aged players, volunteer coaches, and parents to enjoy the game of soccer. With this transition, we can expect player development strategies to translate more fluidly from Outdoor to Indoor play as players progress through age groups.

Re-evaluating Futsal
CMSA will continue to evaluate where Futsal fits in to the developmental journey of players, and ensure that if and when it is relaunched, it is accompanied with the proper coach, parent, and referee education that will help Futsal be successful as a playing format.

Discontinuing Boarded Soccer
This transition to the 7v7 format sees Boarded formats placed on hold for the time being to further evaluate those formats.

Coaches Week
CMSA will be holding the practical portion of the Grassroots Coach Education during CMSA’s Coaches Week from Sept. 27 - Oct. 5. These sessions will be for coaches who have completed the online theory component of their coaching course and need to complete the practical component to finalize their training. More information will be coming shortly on all the CMSA Coaches Week activities.

Refereeing
The Teal Shirt campaign will continue for all first-year referees. CMSA will also be continuing with the Mentorship Program for these new referees to help them become confident and competent officials. For more information on upcoming Entry Level Courses to become a referee please check back in mid-September for course details and dates.

The format of the Indoor 2022/23 Provincial Qualifier Cup Competition will be determined following the Alberta Soccer AGM in late October to mirror the provincials format for each age group and tier.
